Sunderland defenderLamine Kone has encouraged his teammates to keep their run of form going following their impressive 2-1 home victory against Manchester United, a game Kone scored in.

The £5-million January signing from Lorient has been superb since arriving on Wearside, with his physical attributes making him perfect for the English game. A good run of form since Kone’s arrival has seen Sunderland move to within a point of safety and Kone has urged his side not to take their foot off the pedal.

“It was important to take some points against one of the three big teams. We’ve got four points out of nine against them, which isn’t bad at all. It’s perhaps more than we’d hoped for.

“We can look towards the next match at West Ham and hope we can get another victory.

“The situation in the relegation battle is still difficult and we still need to win more games. We’ll need to win as many games as possible for us to remain in the Premier League.”

Kone will be instrumental if Sunderland are to make their annual escape act a reality once again, with the African becoming a key player for the Black Cats after just three appearances on Wearside.
