Sunderland have pulled out of the race to sign Inter Milan fullback Davide Santon, the club have confirmed on their website.
The 25-year-old Italian was expected to be Sunderland’s first summer signing and had passed a medical and agreed personal terms with the club. In a statement released today, however, Sunderland revealed that the ex-Newcastle man would not be joining after they failed to agree a fee for the defender.
Sunderland AFC will not be pursuing its interest in Inter Milan player Davide Santon, after negotiations between the two clubs failed to reach a positive conclusion.
It is very unusual for the club to comment on a failed transfer which potentially indicates that Sunderland’s staff feel Inter are at fault for the deal collapsing, with tensions between the two clubs still thought to be high following the Ricky Alvarez saga.
Should the Black Cats make a signing within the week, the new player will join the squad at their pre-season training camp in Austria where they are carrying out triple training sessions.
Resigning last season’s loan stars DeAndre Yedlin and Yann M’Vila is thought to be on Big Sam’s transfer agenda this summer, with the club yet to make a signing in the window.
