David Moyes appointed Sunderland manager
David Moyes has been appointed as Sunderland’s new manager.
The 53-year-old succeeds Sam Allardyce, who has finally been announced as England manager.
Moyes has been the bookies favourite to take over at the Stadium of Light since Roy Hodgson resigned in June. He has been target by Ellis Short at least twice before, only for Dick Advocaat and Sam Allardyce to take the reigns.
The Scotsman has been out of work since November after his sacking by Real Sociedad and is looking for a chance to rebuild his career in England. His stock has fallen amongst some after a relatively poor season at Man United, which was followed by his Spanish venture.
However, his time at Everton is more relevant to Sunderland. When he took over in 2002, they were in Sunderland’s position – constantly fighting relegation and looking for stability. In his eleven years at Goodison Park, he regularly challenged for the top eight – suffering one blip in his second season when he finished seventeenth.
He becomes the Black Cats’ sixth manager in five years.
