Sunderland travel to the south coast tomorrow looking for a change in fortune when it comes to their Premier League season so far.
Off the back of defeats to Manchester City and Middlesbrough respectively, David Moyes will be hoping that his side can pull off a shock result against Southampton by winning at St Mary’s for the first time in a number of years.
The Saints, however, will be right up for this one. Claude Puel and his men will be looking to silence the doubters and get back into the swing of things with a rampant performance against a potentially vulnerable Sunderland side.
We take a look at the best and worst of this fixture:
Worst: Southampton 8-0 Sunderland 2014/15
It was an afternoon to forget on the South-Coast for Gus Poyet’s side who suffered one of the worst defeats in their history.
Three own goals, and five soft ones were enough to see of a pathetic Sunderland side. This showing was the beginning of the end for Poyet.
Worst: Southampton 2-0 Sunderland 2001/02
After two 7th place finishes, the 2001/02 season was a reality check for Peter Reid’s side. This display was one of many poor matches in a season that saw Sunderland finish 17th.
Best: Sunderland 2-1 Southampton 2014/15
Two Jordi Gomez penalty’s either side of a Sadio Mane goal saw Sunderland claim a surprise three points on Wearside as Dick Advocaat’s men began their run towards safety.
Best: Southampton 1-2 Sunderland 2006/07
What. A. Game.
In Roy Keane’s first season in charge, Sunderland had one of their greatest runs of form, going the new year unbeaten with this result one of their best.
A second-half comeback saw goals from Carlos Edwards and Grant Leadbitter seal all three points for the Black Cats.
