FA Cup Player ratings: Burnley (H)
A week after losing 4-1 at Burnley in the league, the Clarets visited the Stadium of Light in the FA Cup as Sunderland played out a 0-0 bore draw in the third round.
David Moyes named a strong side, making just two changes from the team that drew 2-2 with Liverpool on Monday night. Jason Denayer replaced John O’Shea at centre back, whilst Javier Manquillo replaced the AFCON bound Didier Ndong. Burnley, meanwhile, made six changes – with former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton making his second début for the club.
An instantly forgettable first half saw Jack Rodwell fashion a couple of shots wide of Nick Pope’s goal, whilst Jermain Defoe was inches away from heading in Manquillo’s cross from the right hand side.
Burnley were the better team after the break as Sunderland flagged, with John O’Shea coming off the bench late on to shore up the defence and make his 200th appearance for the club.
The replay at Turf Moor will take place on either January 17th or 18th.
