# The Sunderland/Newcastle media propaganda

Jamie Carragher spoke of the poor recruitment done by the Newcastle hierarchy last night on [Monday Night Football](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11678/9991907/newcastle-cannot-be-happy-with-recruitment-says-jamie-carragher), which came as quite a surprise to Sunderland fans. Why is this newsworthy? Well, let me tell you. The Geordies for many years have underachieved much like Sunderland, and yet it is the Mackems who always seem to be ‘in crisis’ or ‘relegation certainties’, whilst the Magpies are deemed as ‘going through a blip’ or ‘Challenging in the top-half’.

Yes, Sunderland have been at the bottom of the table for what seems like every season since football was invented, however, Newcastle have also had their fair share of relegation scraps in 2 of the past 3 seasons and were in fact, the last north east team to be relegated to the Championship in 2009.

This is not sour grapes, Sunderland fans will tell you that criticism from the media is not a new thing on Wearside. The Black Cats have always been seen as underdogs and the only time they have been a favourite is to be relegated with most pundits before every season. Yes, this may be justified due to the Black Cats’ annual escape from relegation but Newcastle are not tipped as relegation candidates which to me is unjustified. The Magpies may have invested £50-million this summer but that does not guarantee safety and that has shown thus far, with Steve McClaren’s team currently the only team below Sunderland in the league in 20th place.

Yes, Newcastle have a bigger stadium and were very good under Keegan and Bobby Robson in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, however, we are now 10-15 years on, and yet many media outlets still feel that the Geordies are capable of matching those heights currently. Yes, Newcastle are a club that should be matching those glorious days, but why is it that Sunderland, a team that have had an equally as poor few seasons (despite a cup final in 2014) are not given the same treatment by the media.

It has been made apparent that Newcastle have some ‘preferred’ media partners out there, who make it no secret that they, in fact, are bias towards the Geordies over Sunderland, which is understandable given the agreement with the club. However, this does not explain why Sunderland, a team who have the same amount of points have been seen as having a horrific start to the current campaign, whilst the Geordies are seen as being in a transitional period. Is this constant propaganda in the media with the two north-east rivals frustrating for Sunderland fans? Yes. However, does this upset and effect the Black Cats faithful? Categorically, no.
