# Match Report: Swansea 2-4 Sunderland

Sunderland secured a vital three points in a relegation crunch tie last night in South Wales. A Jermain Defoe hat-trick helped Sunderland to their second win in two league games as the Black Cats look to gain momentum in the relegation dogfight.

The Black Cats took the lead inside the opening five minutes through the deadly Defoe after Adam Johnson and Fabio Borini combined following a poor goal kick from the Swansea goalkeeper. Adam Johnson had the opportunity to make it 2-0 to Sunderland just a few moments later but steered a right-footed shot horribly wide of the goal. Gylfi Sigurdsson equalised for the Swans from the spot after referee Graham Scott, who had an awful game, gave a penalty after Andre Ayew kicked a combination of the floor and his own foot.

Scott was at the centre of controversy again a few minutes later when he sent off Kyle Naughton for a ‘high’ challenge on Yann M’Vila. Sunderland would look to push on from here against the 10-man Swans only for Swansea to go and score a few minutes later to make it 2-1 at the break.

The Wearsiders came out of the blocks flying in the second half and equalised within five minutes again. Patrick Van Aanholt, who was impressive throughout, arrowed the ball into the top-right hand corner with the aid of a slight deflection. From this point the game was all Sunderland, with Jermain Defoe grabbing a further two goals to claim his hat-trick assisted by Adam Johnson and Patrick Van Aanholt.

This was a massive three points for Sunderland who moved up above Newcastle following back-to-back wins. The Black Cats are now behind Swansea and safety by just one point as they travel to London to take on Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday lunchtime.
