Wigan Athletic are trying to bring back one of their former players, Sunderland midfielder Jordi Gomez. According to reports the Spaniard is a key target for Wigan who are back in the Championship this season following promotion from League One. The 31-year-old swapped the north-west for the north-east in the summer of 2014 after Latics failed to bounce back to the premier league.

Despite scoring four goals for the Black Cats last season, Gomez has fell out of favour on Wearside and spent the last six months of the season on loan at Blackburn Rovers where he impressed. Although the playmaker moved to Sunderland on a free transfer, the Black Cats will want compensating for the final 12 months of his contract, with a loan fee or transfer fee required by the Latics.

Gomez, who won the Player of the Year award during his final season with Latics, would also have to take a significant pay cut to fit into the Wigan wage structure, with Gomez on a substantial pay packet on Wearside. Gomez appears to have no future at Sunderland, with Sam Allardyce rarely using the Spaniard, and we could well see him depart this summer, whether that be to Wigan or elsewhere.
