The Black Cats were poised to sign Leroy Fer from QPR, but Sky Sports have confirmed that Fer failed the Sunderland medical and will be returning back to QPR.
After agreeing personal terms, the 25 year old was set to finalise a £2M season long loan at the Stadium of Light but the deal collapsed.
The Dutch international is reported to have previously failed a medical at Everton in 2013, which would have seen him move to the Toffees for a fee of £8.5M, since then he has suffered a medial collateral ligament injury while playing for now relegated side QPR.
Leroy’s injuries have cost him to change clubs in his football career. Having played more than 200 games in total for all his clubs till date, he made 29 appearances for QPR last season and managed to score six goals for them.
Sunderland, who finished 16th in the Premier League last season, have also seen defender Nicolas Lombaerts’ move collapse due to a failed medical, as the player was set to sign for a reported fee of £7M. Sunderland will now have to turn their attention to Manchester United star Adnan Januzaj as Dick Advocaat would be looking to sign the young player on a loan deal
