Throughout the summer, there have been whispers that Sunderland are interested in Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele. There is no doubt about it that an attacking midfielder is at the top of the shopping list for Advocaat and whilst a bid has yet to have been made, ReadSunderland take a look at five reasons why The Black Cats should break the bank to sign Mousa Dembele who is valued at £15m by Spurs.
Creative Spark –
After drawing 8 games last year and seeing none of our strikers hitting double-figures throughout the season, Moussa Dembele would provide the much needed creative spark The Black Cats have been so desperate for in recent years. Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher proved at the 4-2 defeat to Leicester, that if they are given chances, they will score goals. Dembele could be the man who, not only helps Sunderland tick, but creates the chances which are unquestionably very limited in a Sunderland side who finished joint bottom goalscorers last
campaign.
Chips in with Goals –
Mousa Dembele is a player, when given regular game time, who likes to score goals. The twenty-eight year old Belgian has managed to bag over 50 goals throughout his career, and as we heard Advocaat say previously that he was keen to add goals to the midfield, Dembele could fit the bill perfectly. With no real goal threat in the centre of the park from the likes of Lee Cattermole, Jack Rodwell and Sebastian Larsson, the Belgian International has all the experience to know how to attack the opposition’s penalty box and can certainly strike a ball with his left-boot.
Fits well in the system –
The Belgian’s physical presence and dribbling ability will ensure that he fits into Dick Advocaat’s favoured 4-3-3 formation, with one of the midfielders playing more attacking, which in this case could be Dembele. Advocaat has insisted in the past that his priority purchase is an attacking midfielder this summer and with the Leroy Fer deal falling through, Mousa Dembele would be the ideal alternative.
Playing catch-up –
With the likes of Stoke, Swansea and Crystal Palace making moves in the summer Transfer Window, there is no denying that Sunderland still need to spend a significant amount to bolster their squad. With the transfers of Xherdan Shaqiri to Stoke and Yohan Cabaye to Crystal Palace, there isn’t a genuine reason why Sunderland shouldn’t show some optimism in trying to lure Mousa Dembele to the Stadium of Light, as fans feel like Sunderland are deteriorating in the Premier League, whilst seeing other teams making moves for marquee players.
Statement of Intent –
Considering there are a few clubs chasing the signature of Mousa Dembele, a signing of this calibre would really be a feather in the cap for the Black Cats after a dismal start to their campaign. Many fans have urged Ellis Short to splash the cash on a significant amount of players, but even if a bid was made in attempt to capture the Belgian midfielder, it would show a huge statement of intent to the fans, showing that there is still unfinished business left in the Transfer Window for Sunderland.
