Today marks the end of a transfer turmoil which many Sunderland fans have surfaced opinions about. Yes, Fabio Borini has completed his £8-million move to Sunderland, potentially rising to £10 million. Following the Italian’s last spell on Wearside in 2013-14, Fabio Borini will be looking to create an instant impact in the Premier League following a disappointing few years at Liverpool. As said, at his time on Wearside he did manage to win the fans over, and being named the ‘Geordie Slayer’ was obviously going to make him a fan favourite following his loan spell.
However, two very long transfer windows seemed to pass while the forward sat on the hinges of a growing Liverpool team, and stories continued to leak that the 24-year-old would make a return to Wearside, yet no progression was made on the deal. Swiftly fans’ opinions seemed to differ, and many people begun to dislike the idea of Borini making a return, as he supposedly rejected a move back to the Stadium of Light in the Summer 2014 transfer window.
Nevertheless, a year later, under a new manager and new philosophies, Fabio Borini signs a four-year contract with the club and is expected to make a big impact on the goalscoring front. It feels many years ago that the Geordie slayer played in a Sunderland shirt, however, bagged 7 goals in his 32 appearances for the club, also notching our only goal at Wembley against Manchester City in the League Cup final.
The big question that surfaces today is where does he fit in? Sunderland have not been lacking on the attacking front, scoring 6 goals in their 4 league games so far, could this deal be what Sunderland really needed as the transfer window enters its last 24 hours? It also means another space being taken up in the attacking line, already being chased by multiple players, who will be filling the bench, allowing the £10 million Italian to improve the side?
The bigger question could be who is next? It seems obvious that after conceding 10 goals along scoring those 6, a big improvement is needed in the backline in order for Advocaat to save Sunderland from their regular appearance in the relegation scrap. Will another player be brought into the club or are the curtains closing early on Wearside? Let’s just say I’m hoping Mr. Short has something left up his sleeve.
