Goal of the Month: August

After a month of somewhat eventful displays following the start of a new campaign in the Premier League from Sunderland. Read Sunderland take a look at each individual goal scored throughout the month and picks their top 3 Goal of the Month candidates, choosing a winner from the first 5 games (Inc. cup matches). The Black Cats have hit the back of the net a staggering 12 times already this season, meaning there are definitely a few contenders for this month’s award.

3rd Place – Jermain Defoe – Leicester 4-2 Sunderland

Starting off with 3rd place, this goal was the start of a roller-coaster ride, as we have Jermain Defoe opening his and Sunderland’s account for the season away at Leicester. A patient move from Sunderland in and around the Leicester half saw Adam Johnson receive the ball from 30 yards and play a wonderful, fainted pass through to Defoe who clinically slotted the ball at the near post, sending Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way.

2nd Place – Jermain Defoe (2nd) – Sunderland 6-3 Exeter

Following a goal-fest at the Stadium of Light with Exeter in the Capital one Cup, it was again a Jermain Defoe goal which finds its way into the top 3 Goals of the Month. Defoe completed a hat-trick in this game, but it was his second goal in particular which stood out. Making an intelligent run behind the Exeter defence, then controlling brilliantly under pressure, which led to the Englishman calmly slotting the ball inside the near post. Defoe has a knack for his clinical finishing and once again showed off his prowess from 15 yards out.

1st Place – Yann M’Vila – Aston Villa 2-2 Sunderland

The pick of the August bunch was none other than Yann M’Vila’s fabulous 25-yard free-kick at Villa Park in a score-draw. With the absence of Sebastian Larsson, M’Vila stood up to the plate and wonderfully curled the ball into the top right of the goal from the right-hand side of the Villa penalty box, leaving Brad Guzan with no chance.
