Real Sociedad manager David Moyes has today revealed that he turned down the opportunity to return to premier league management this summer. Sunderland had been on the managerial hunt after it appeared that Dick Advocaat would not be returning to the Stadium of Light before his miraculous U-turn. So, did David Moyes reject Sunderland’s advances this summer?
The Scot said: “This summer I received a lot of offers to return to the Premier League.
“But I have decided to stay here because I believe in this project and I believe in the players we have – players who I know much better now.”
Sunderland fans may have fond memories of Moyes’ last spell in England, when the Black Cats defeated the Scot’s Manchester United side in the Capital One Cup semi-final on penalties on a historical day at Old Trafford. Moyes has 12 years experience in the top flight of English football with Manchester United and Everton and would certainly have been a good candidate for the Sunderland job. However, Dick Advocaat was always the first choice candidate and was finally persuaded to sign a one-year deal on Wearside.
Moyes is enjoying a successful time in La Liga after a disappointing spell at Old Trafford, with the Scot guiding Sociedad away from the relegation zone last season, and up the table to 12th. Sociedad have drawn their opening two La Liga matches of the season 0-0. Moyes’ next match in charge is away at Real Betis on September 12.
