After re-joining Sunderland in the summer transfer window, Fabio Borini refuses to shoulder any blame for his nightmare spell at Liverpool. The Italian forward completed his move to the Stadium of Light before the transfer window closed last month after being left out of the Reds’ match-day squads for the first four games of the new campaign.
The switch to Sunderland delighted all fans on Wearside as Borini previously enjoyed a successful loan spell during the 2013-14 campaign, hitting double-figures for the season. However, after the prosperous loan-spell, Borini wanted to stamp his credentials at Liverpool because he thought he’d have a fair chance of getting in the first-team. However, this wasn’t the case and after declining the move last summer, Borini has returned to the Black Cats after being forced to train on his own.
The 24-year-old was Brendan Rodgers’ first signing when he was appointed the manager of Liverpool in the summer of 2012, but Borini pulled no punches in his interview and revealed what he thought during his difficult spell on Merseyside.
“It was very difficult [at Liverpool], it didn’t work out. Not because of me, but because of someone else” the Italian revealed to BBC Newcastle
“Everyone knows within the club and outside that I have been working hard.”
“I gave everything for the club. That is why I stayed at Liverpool because I thought I could help the team.”
“They made me train at different times to the first-team so I was actually not seeing them. Not because I said something or did something wrong because I know I did everything right and the people inside the club know that. I can’t really say ‘why?’ because I don’t know why.”
Aside from all this, Fabio Borini expressed in his first interview as a Sunderland player that he’s “Here to stay and to play for Sunderland” because he’s “proud to wear the shirt” and can’t wait to get started.
