Sunderland have had a poor start to the Premier League season and following the loss to Tottenham yesterday, the Sunderland owner, Ellis Short, has come under criticism from the fans.
This is not the first time the fans have grown angry over the owner, as fans were frustrated at their lack of activity in the transfer window earlier on this summer.
Niall Quinn has since defended the American and his actions. Quinn worked with Short when he was club Chairman and when he was director of international development.
Quinn spoke to Sky Sports in the build-up to the loss versus Tottenham and had this to say about the Sunderland owner: “I think it’s very unfair [Short’s criticism]. I think he came in at a critical time in the club’s history. This man came in a stranger to the area, and he’s put more than just a pile of money into it, he’s put his heart and soul into it at times.
“He’s put things in place that haven’t always worked out. But he has spent money to do that and I think it’s most unfair that he gets that.
“He needs a break and I’d love to see Dick get this team rolling because he will go and sign a player or two when it’s right.”
Niall Quinn was in the Sky Sports studio for the match and outlined impressive performances from summer signings Kaboul, Toivonen, M’Vila and Borini as positives to take out of the game at the Stadium of Light. A game which the much-maligned owner was at.
