Lee Cattermole seemed to make the headlines for all the wrong reasons, but after last year’s convincing performances, he stood as a strong contender for Sunderland’s player of the year. However, due to a dismal start, will the former captain make the bench this season?
This is after his latest appearance against Tottenham on Saturday, being the main reason Sunderland could not get a point due to not dealing with Ryan Mason. This followed a poor run of games for the anchorman, and now with a shining Yann M’Vila consistently making critical challenges for the defence, and Jordi Gomez returning from injuries, where does he stand?
Cattermole recently signed a 5-year extension with the club, and has almost tallied 140 appearances for the Black Cats. Will the 27 year old make an impact before his future appears in doubt, or will he be elsewhere by the end of the season? It’s fair to say that duplicating recent performances will only gain him a place in the reserves, and his 6 year service to the club may not be the nicest ending after all.
