New Contract for Watmore On The Horizon?

Although Duncan Watmore is doing all he can to break into the starting eleven at Sunderland, the club have recognised that a new contract is a priority for the excitingEnglish attacking midfielder.

Watmore, 21, who has made three league appearances for Sunderland this season and scored in the 3-1defeat to Norwich on his home debut, is a player that everyone wants to see break through from the Academy and prove his worth in the top flight. A lot of Sunderland supporters were angered to see Watmore, who scored a brilliant hat-trick against Manchester City, left out of the squad to face City in the league cup during the week.

Even though he was left out of the squad on Tuesday, Dick Advocaat still sees Watmore having a bright future on Wearside and hopes a new contract will send the right message out to not only the fans but the other youth talent within the club, such as Beadling and Jordan Pickford.

Watmore, who has also shown his talent for the National team in the recent U21 Toulon Tournament where he won the player of the tournament accolade, needs to decide whether a loan move would benefit him with regular games to build his confidence or keep doing what he is doing to try and break into the Sunderland team and stay there.

Sunderland must keep hold of Watmore as he is full of talent, he has raw pace and the ability to slot in behind the attackers and help chip in with goals. We have seen many young players come through the Academy but then drift into obscurity with the exception of Henderson and possibly Colback.

It is rumoured that Sunderland are looking to offer ‘fresh terms’ to Watmore with the club keen to promote their home-grown players.

Hopefully, we will hear some good news regarding Watmore’s future and this will help to bring him on further with his first-team development.
