M’Vila: Advocaat is not to blame

After a poor start to the season, Sunderland currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League, a position they are all too familiar with. For the third season running, Sunderland have failed to win a game before October, an alarming statistic.

Sunderland are the current odds on favourite to be relegated, with Advocaat also the favourite for the next manager to leave their club. Ellis Short has said that Advocaat hasn’t thought of quitting, but that hasn’t stopped Patrick Vieira being linked. Sunderland midfielder and new signing Yann M’Vila has offered his support for the Dutchman.

It’s not the fault of the manager at all, like some people are saying. It’s completely the fault of the players. The coach works very hard, he talks to us and is a motivator. For me, he has given me the confidence to play my natural game. We should be giving everything for the supporters of Sunderland. It’s not the coach. For me, it’s a question of mentality.

Mentality has definitely been questioned by the Sunderland faithful, after just 2 points from their first 7 games. However, Yann M’Vila is one of only a handful of Sunderland players to show their commitment week in, week out and perform well. M’Vila continued to express his sympathy for the fans.

I feel sorry and sad for the supporters. There’s positives every week. Like at Manchester United, we were good for 45 minutes, even though we hadn’t had many chances. But then they score a goal… It’s all in the head and you need the aggression and fight to get back in the game. We have to change that. It’s sad for them and sad for the coach. I’m truly sorry that we haven’t won a match yet. Hopefully that can change against West Ham on Saturday and we show the hunger to get three points.

No fingers have been pointed at M’Vila, but all of the Sunderland faithful will agree with his comments, implying that the morale in the changing room is low, and it needs to change. Hopefully The Black Cats can get their first win of the season in the upcoming game, even though it will still keep them in the relegation zone.
