It can be argued that the Director of Football role at Sunderland has created more problems than resolved them, with the club now supposedly scrapping the role due to the arrival of Big Sam; it’s easy to say most fans will not mourn the passing, and we can expect the experienced manager to be showing his full use in and around the transfer market.
Past managers have criticized the system used by Ellis Short, as shown when Gus Poyet was found to have disliked the idea of not being able to sign his own players. It can also be said that in the past 3 years, 3 managers and 2 Directors of Football have lived through their respective roles, followed by dozens of players, but no changes to our position in the league.
It’s understandable however Short’s intentions throughout those years. The Director of Football system works very well around Europe, plus allowing more time and effort for managers to help the team focus on the pitch and to play the game better, but as managers go, the best always sign the players they want, and we know under Allardyce that we will get some of the more experienced players from around the world; arguably what Sunderland may need to confirm their place for the 2016/17 Premier League season.
Lets just hope that this change could see that happen.
