Sunderland hot shot Duncan Watmore wants to sign a new contract with the Black Cats, according to the Sunderland Echo.
Watmore, 21, has impressed this season – scoring twice and earning his first start for the Lads against Southampton. He also put in a man of the match performance for England Under 21s on Monday, playing a part in all three of England’s goals despite coming off the bench with just fifteen minutes to go.
His current contract is up at the end of the season and both the “Ginger Messi” and Sam Allardyce are keen to tie down a new deal.
“I’m trying to push to play as much as possible.” said Watmore.
“The new manager has been great with me since he came in.
“If he gives me anymore [opportunities] I just have to make sure I take them and kick on. I need to try to ensure I play as much as I can.
“Do I want to stay at Sunderland? Yes I do. It’s a great club.”
The representatives of the former Altrincham man are seeking assurances over Watmore’s place in the first team, as well as an improved salary that includes his position in the England junior team.
A deal looks likely. Allardyce has previously stated that he wants Watmore to play a big role in the first team this season, whilst the player has been delighted with the fans’ warm reaction to him.
