Sunderland are thought to be chasing ex-Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar along with Norwich City and some Bundesliga sides.
Vlaar left Aston Villa in the summer after rejecting offers of a new contract from the West Midlands club. He picked up an injury over the summer which meant that he was unable to find a new club and now, in November, still finds himself as a free agent without a team.

Norwich and Sunderland are both struggling defensively this season and Ron Vlaar would be a good addition to either side with his Premier League quality and experience.
The 30-year-old played in almost 80 Premier League matches for Villa and has 31 caps for Holland to his name. It is the type of experience that Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce is thought to be very keen on adding to his squad.
Sunderland are in desperate need of defensive quality and Vlaar could be just the man they need.
