Sunderland are close to completing their first signing of the window. Only seven days into the window, Sam Allardyce is closing in on the ex-Bayern Munich player, Jan Kirchhoff.

The 25-year-old German has suffered several injuries and never really cemented his place at Bayern Munich. The defender has apparently rejected three German sides, Eintracht Frankfurt, VFC Stuttgart and FC Augsburg, in order to join Sunderland, as reported by ‘The Sunderland Echo‘. The defender spent last season on loan at Schalke last year and has not made a competitive start for Bayern Munich. It seems his lack of chances for Bayern, and the chance to play England for England were key in Kirchhoff’s decision to move.
“I had several options There were requests from the Bundesliga, but I didn’t really consider them or to stay at Bayern. I’m looking forward to playing in England and the new challenge.”
Kirchhoff is expected to be unveiled by Sunderland today after he underwent his medical yesterday. The fee has been reported to be around £1 million after he had only six months left. If the move does indeed go through, Allardyce will have brought in a valuable addition, to cover the loss of Younes Kaboul.
