Sunderland secured a vital three points in a six-goal thriller last night in Wales. A Jermain Defoe hat-trick sealed the win in a match that was full of dashes of quality and peppered in controversy.
The Black Cats took the lead inside the opening five minutes through the deadly Defoe after Adam Johnson and Fabio Borini combined following a poor goal kick from the Swansea goalkeeper. Gylif Sigurdsson and Andre Ayew would give Swansea the lead at half-time despite having Kyle Naughton controversially sent-off.
Patrick Van Aanholt, who was impressive throughout, arrowed the ball into the top-right hand corner with the aid of a slight deflection straight after the break. From this point onwards the game was all Sunderland, with Jermain Defoe grabbing a further two goals to claim his hat-trick.
