Sunderland grabbed a vital three points in the relegation battle as they defeated Swansea City in South Wales to move within one point of their rivals thanks to a Jermain Defoe hat-trick.
The Black Cats took the lead inside the opening five minutes through the deadly Defoe after Adam Johnson and Fabio Borini combined following a poor goal kick from the Swansea goalkeeper. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Andre Ayew would give Swansea the lead at half-time despite having Kyle Naughton controversially sent-off.
Patrick Van Aanholt, who was impressive throughout, arrowed the ball into the top-right hand corner with the aid of a slight deflection straight after the break. From this point onwards the game was all Sunderland, with Jermain Defoe grabbing a further two goals to claim his hat-trick.
