Sunderland have made a loan offer for Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy according to Chris Young of the Sunderland Echo.
The French International is hoping of a late push for a call-up to the French squad for this summer’s European Championships and will need guaranteed first-team football to achieve that. Debuchy has found himself down the pecking order at Arsenal since his £12-million move from Newcastle United and is now behind Hector Bellerin in the first-team fold.
Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has been eager to add a new right-back to his squad this month despite having three on the books already. Sunderland are hoping to beat Aston Villa to the signing of the 30-year-old, with the midlands club in negotiations with the Gunners for several weeks. Debuchy would be open to a move to Sunderland despite his ex-Newcastle links as he searches for first-team football.
“Whatever happens, even if it is to return (to Arsenal) this summer and then start again, I have to go this winter. I cannot stay at Arsenal,” he said earlier this month.
“As the weeks go by, we get closer to the Euros. I have to play to try to return as soon as March for the Netherlands and Russia friendlies. I clearly lost six months. I would have preferred to leave last summer but the coach told me that I would have my chance. Ultimately, it was not the case.”
It is believed that should Sunderland sign Debuchy then one right-back may be allowed to leave the Black Cats before the transfer deadline. DeAndre Yedlin, whose loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur could be terminated early, or Adam Matthews, who has failed to impress since his summer move from Celtic could move on loan to the Championship.
