Sunderland have announced that Jordan Pickford has signed a contract extension, tieing him down to the Stadium of Light until at least 2020.
The 21-year-old goalkeeper, who made his Premier League début earlier this month, has impressed this season – first of all in a six-month loan spell at Preston before making his first two competitive appearances for the Black Cats.
Despite conceding four goals, he was Sunderland’s man of the match against Tottenham Hotspur a few weeks ago.
Manager Sam Allardyce told the club’s website:
Jordan is an exceptional talent who has already demonstrated that he is comfortable playing at the highest level. At the tender age of just 21, which is still very young in goalkeeping terms, there is still a lot more potential for development which is really exciting for us.
Born in Washington in 1994, Pickford has been a part of the Academy of Light since he was eight years old and is highly rated across the country – Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were linked with moves for the youngster in the summer.
The new deal should bring an end to any potential interest in the shot-stopper, who is expected to become the club’s first-choice next season.
