Sunderland conceded a 94th-minute equaliser against 10-man Southampton to miss out on the chance of going three points clear of the relegation zone.
Virgil van Dijk slammed the ball into the top corner past a helpless Vito Mannone to ensure the home team denied the Black Cats the three points after Jermain Defoe ended his goal-scoring drought with what looked like an 85th-minute winner.
Southampton captain Jose Fonte was sent off with 10 minutes to go for hauling down Fabio Borini when the Italian was through on goal.
The Black Cats are now in a mini league of four – Swansea eight points above the 17th-placed Wearsiders, who are only one point above the relegation zone. Aston Villa look set to go down, but both Newcastle United and Norwich City are firmly in with a chance of staying up. Both, however, have worse goal difference than Sunderland.
