Sunderland outcast Emanuele Giaccherini could make a surprise move to Chelsea in the summer, according to the Sunderland Echo.
Giaccherini, 30, is currently spending the season on loan in his native Italy with Bologna – where he has scored six goals in seventeen league appearances.
Now it has emerged that Chelsea, the reigning Premier League champions, could make a shock bid for the 5ft 5 1/2 attacking midfielder to replace Eden Hazard if Antonio Conte – manager of the Italian national team – replaces Guus Hiddink in the summer.
Despite making over 40 appearances for the Black Cats, Giaccherini has failed to find his feet on Wearside since arriving in 2013. Many pundits agree with former boss Dick Advocaat, who said that he wasn’t suited to the physical nature of the English football. His injury record would seem to prove that.
The Italian looks certain to leave Sunderland permanently in the summer but is believed to have wanted to return home to Italy. Whether a move to London would change his mind remains to be seen.
