Sunderland hosted last season’s Premier League Champions Chelsea in this weekend’s penultimate home game. A win for Sunderland would potentially leave their fate in their own hands.
A terrific game saw Chelsea go ahead through a Diego Costa goal inside the first half.It didn’t take long for Sunderland to respond when Khazri hammered a right-footed volley past Courtois following a lame clearance. On the stroke of half-time, however, Matic ensured Chelsea would go into the break in the lead.
Fan favourite Borini popped up with the equaliser on 67 minutes, before top-goalscorer Defoe saw his deflected shot hit the back of the net with 20 minutes to play. Sunderland held out for a 3-2, meaning just one win is required now, following Newcastle’s draw at Aston Villa and Norwich’s defeat against Manchester United. An unbelievable atmosphere, which will hopefully be recreated against Everton on Wednesday!
