Sunderland clinched their premier league safety with a game to spare for the third year running last night as the Black Cats thrashed Everton 3-0.
The Stadium of Light was a sea of red and white as yet another sell-out crowd cheered the Wearsiders on as they claimed a famous victory which not only secured their top-flight status but also relegated Norwich City and fierce rivals Newcastle United, much to the delight of the Sunderland faithful.
Sunderland began the match nervously, but once Patrick Van Aanholt struck midway through the first-half, the Black Cats never looked back. Two goals either side of the break from the ever impressive Lamine Kone put the game to bed, and if Jermain Defoe was a bit more clinical, the scoreline could have been a lot worse for the Toffee’s who now find themselves in a sticky situation following a poor run of form.
