Sunderland looks set to approach Huddersfield’s main striker Nahki Wells this summer, according to the Royal Gazette.
The report suggests that the North East club have joined the fray to sign Wells, with Southampton already registering a keen interest in the player.
The talented forward has been in spectacular form for the Terriers and finished the season as their top goalscorer on 18 goals.
Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce is said to be a big fan of Wells and is hoping that securing the services of a striker with bags of goals to his game can keep him away from a relegation dogfight next season.
The relegation-threatened manager had to rely on the goalscoring exploits of Jermaine Defoe to keep the side afloat and will be hoping to bring the speedy forward a partner to ensure it doesn’t happen again this season.
However, Wells is said to be a key part of David Wagner’s plans at the John Smiths stadium and will be hoping to keep hold of his main striker in preparation for next season.
Speaking to the press about the rumoured move, Huddersfield Chairman Dean Hoyle said;
Nakhi has two years left on his contract, we want him and David (Wagner) wants him. As a club, we have no financial need to sell, and Nahki is happy here.
Of course he has aspirations to play at the highest level he can and every player should have. But we think he can really help us push on, and hopefully, Nahki does too.
The Chairman, who sanctioned the Wells deal after the accepted bid broke the club’s transfer record fee, is currently on leave while he heals from a knee injury.
Wells joined Huddersfield in a £1.3million move from Yorkshire rivals Bradford City and looks like one of the best bargains in the Championship over the past few years.
