Sunderland are lining up a bid for Athletic Bilbao winger Ibai Gomez, according to the Sunderland Echo.
After an injury hit season, the 26-year-old is available for a cut-price fee of £2.3 million – seemingly somewhat of a bargain if he is able to “do a Kirchhoff” and find his fitness.
Big Sam is looking for a winger after losing Adam Johnson last season and is known to scout the foreign markets for his signings.
Gomez hasn’t played since October after suffering from tendinitis in his right knee, but when fully fit he is an asset to any team. The Spaniard – born in Bilbao itself – is known for his dribbling ability and is considered a set piece specialist.
He has scored 17 goals in 125 appearances for Bilbao in all competitions – a decent record for the wide man who is usually deployed on the left flank. He can also play upfront.
