According to univision.com, MLS side New York Red Bulls are interested in signing Sunderland striker and former England international, Jermain Defoe.
The 33-year-old who scored 18 goals in 34 league games for the Black Cats last season is a target for the Red Bulls, who sit second in the Eastern Conference. After a poor start to the 2016 Major League Soccer campaign, Head Coach Jesse Marsch’s concerns of a lack of goals seems to have disappeared, particularly after the 7-0 thumping of neighbours New York City FC.

However, with rumours of star striker Bradley Wright-Phillips potentially departing the MLS for the Indian Super League, it looks as if Marsch has set his sights on adding another goalscorer to his roster for the second half of the season.
It is extremely unlikely that Defoe would be allowed to leave Sunderland unless a significantly high bid was placed by a club. Defoe arrived on Wearside in a free transfer swap deal with American Jozy Altidore and has found himself a fan favourite with Sam Allardyce’s men.
The report however, claims that Defoe would, in fact, be interested in making a return to the MLS, after making 19 appearances in his short spell with Toronto FC scoring 11 goals.
