Santiago Vergini looks set to leave the Stadium of Light after three seasons, according to the Sunderland Echo.
The defender, who can play as both a centre back and right back, looks set to return to his native Argentina with Boca Juniors after they agreed a £1.5 million fee with Sunderland. Vergini is reported to have undergone a medical and will sign a three year contract.
“It is a great joy and I’m very excited.” Vergini told the Argentinian media today. “I hope to complete the move smoothly.
“I want to come and add something to the group, and contribute what I can.”
Vergini was brought to Sunderland in January 2014 on a loan deal under then-manager Gus Poyet. Despite struggling to make an impression initially, he cemented a spot at right back during the Great Escape. The 27-year-old rejoined Sunderland on a loan-to-buy agreement ahead of the 2014-15 season – with Dick Advocaat forced to take up the £2 million permanent deal due to the number of appearances the Argentine international made.

The Dutchman made it clear that Vergini had no place in his plans for the season just gone and he was duly loaned out to Getafe. Despite impressing the Spanish club, they were unable to sign the defender after their relegation. Now it seems as though his time on Wearside will officially come to an end with Sam Allardyce also not fancying the 6′ 3″ centre half.
Santi leaves Sunderland with 51 appearances to his name – all of which came during his loan spells with the Black Cats. He will be infamously remembered for his volleyed own goal in the 8-0 drubbing by Southampton.
