Leicester City defender Danny Simpson could be inline for a shock return to Sunderland, according to the Daily Mail.
Simpson has one year left on his contract and is yet to be offered an extension, which could bring the Black Cats to offer £4 million for the 29-year-old full back.
The Englishman spent the second half of the 2006-07 season on loan at Sunderland during the Championship winning campaign led by Roy Keane, only to join Newcastle United in 2010 after spending a season on loan at Tyneside.
Despite making over 100 appearances for the Magpies, he would be a welcome addition to the Sunderland squad at present as there are just two senior full backs on the books – Patrick van Aanholt and out of favour Billy Jones.
DeAndre Yedlin has also been linked with making last season’s loan deal permanent but talks are reported to have stalled, with Spurs asking £5 million for the USA international.
Last week, a deal for Davide Santon fell through at the last minute after Inter and Sunderland were unable to agree a price for the Italian.
