Sunderland manager David Moyes has reassured supporters and Wahbi Khazri alike that the Tunisian international is still very much in his future plans with the club, the Chronicle Live can report
The creative wide man is set to start under Moyes for the first time in his tenure as Sunderland boss tonight against League One side Shrewsbury Town in the second round of the EFL Cup at the Stadium of Light.
Wahbi’s part of my plans. Just because he hasn’t featured in the first couple of games doesn’t mean he isn’t in my plans.
Khazri’s return to first-team football will be a much welcomed one for the Sunderland faithful, who are overseeing a massively inexperienced and stretched squad.
He will play tonight, though, and he probably needs some game time – he could have done with another couple of pre-season games, really.
The 25-year-old impressed in his maiden season with the club since his arrival from Bordeaux and will be keen to make a difference in red and white for the coming campaign.
Moyes revealed that the reason for Khazri’s lack of proper action in the first two games of the season was due to him being slightly less fit than his other team-mates.
Wahbi came back a week after everybody else, and I think he looked a little bit behind everyone else in the pre-season games.
