An early miss from close range by Defoe, and a high defensive back line, encouraged West Brom to gain a one goal advantage heading into Half time. Record signing Nacer Chadli got on the end of a waited pass by Matt Phillips in the 35th minute to slot the ball into the bottom left corner, betaing a diving Jordan Pickford.
The second half saw a dominant West Brom tallying their shot total to 17, even though Sunderland were in control of possession they couldn’t make it count until substitute Van Aanholt scored within the back in the 83rd minute beating goalkeeper Ben Foster, assist came from the ever present Duncan Watmore.
Sunderland are yet without their first win of the season but do move up one place to 19th, West Brom however move up to 9th
