Regis Le Bris admits Sunderland’s ‘season is over’ ahead of Manchester United visit

Regis Le Bris believes Sunderland’s season is almost concluded, but they must play for some pride against in-form Manchester United.

‎And the Stadium of Light is expected to receive some illumination this weekend, as one of the Premier League’s most decorated clubs comes visiting.

‎United’s three-match winning streak will be tested by the North Easterners, although Le Bris acknowledged it will be a tough contest.

‎It’s a fixture between two clubs with contrasting form in their last three outings.

Le Bris admits Sunderland season is ‘over’ amid recent struggles

The recent points dropped against Aston Villa, Forest, and Wolves have taken the wind out of Sunderland’s momentum in the race for a top-four finish.

‎More damagingly, their long wait for European football after many years has taken a significant blow.

‎With four points separating the Black Cats from Brentford, who sit 7th with 51 points, Sunderland’s chances of securing a European ticket are slim. A quick look at the Premier League standings says it all.

‎“The season is almost over, so we’ll use this time to prepare for next season because we don’t have another choice,” Le Bris said at the press conference ahead of the Man United game.

‎“It’s tough, but we have to stay positive. We must start looking ahead to next season and see what happens.”

Sunderland must show character Le Bris insist

Manchester United’s recent dynamism and spike in form aren’t down to luck. Michael Carrick’s men have put in hard work, shown consistency, and above all, managed to get the best out of their squad. And the dividends are obvious.

‎Again, for most Sunderland fans the odds favour the Red Devils. United boast a better head-to-head record, having claimed victory in all three previous meetings, scoring nine goals and conceding just once.

‎For Le Bris, character is what his team needs. The Black Cats’ last home victory over Manchester United came back in 2016.

‎“It was a great experience at Old Trafford. They’re a strong side, and the last time they dominated our left side for over 30 minutes. We need to be at our best against them,” he told the media.

Black Cats’ next season starts now

It’s almost accurate to say Wearside’s season is “over,” borrowing from gaffer Le Bris. There are two games left on the calendar: a trip to Everton and a final match against Chelsea.

‎Both are very difficult games if you want to take maximum points. Chelsea need European qualification to ease their financial burden, while Everton will want to wrap things up on a high.

‎Therefore, it’s only prudent and proactive for the Black Cats to keep the door for a European ticket ajar while also starting steps to compete better next season.

‎A few quality arrivals in the summer, plus some sales to enhance squad depth, will be key assets for the 2026/27 season, especially when coupled with a cash injection.
