Sunderland have reportedly been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Napoli midfielder Zambo Anguissa, with Massimiliano Allegri making it clear that he doesn’t want to lose the Cameroon international this summer.
The Black Cats have been linked with the 30-year-old since returning to the Premier League and are understood to have made an approach for the midfielder. Napoli, however, have rejected Sunderland’s opening proposal and are demanding around €20 million to consider letting him leave.
That could make another addition difficult for Sunderland, who have made just one permanent signing so far this summer. Thomas Meunier arrived on a free transfer, but Regis Le Bris is still looking to strengthen his squad ahead of a season that will include both Premier League and European football.
Allegri wants Zambo Anguissa to stay
According to Italian reports, Allegri considers Zambo Anguissa ‘untouchable’ at Napoli.
The midfielder has become an important figure in Naples since initially joining the club on loan in 2021. His move was made permanent the following summer after he had previously spent time in the Premier League with Fulham.
Anguissa made 58 Premier League appearances for the London club, but has since enjoyed significant success in Italy. He has helped Napoli win two Serie A titles and played an important role in both campaigns.
His importance to the Italian champions is now making Sunderland’s task particularly difficult.
Napoli are reportedly holding out for around £17 million. The club are reluctant to lose an experienced midfielder without receiving a substantial fee.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Anguissa’s longer-term future in Naples.
Napoli have been in discussions with the player over a new contract, although an agreement has yet to be reached.
Sunderland face another obstacle
Anguissa’s contract situation is one reason Sunderland have been able to maintain hope of signing him.
The Cameroon international’s current deal runs until 2027, meaning Napoli face a decision over whether to extend his stay or consider a sale before he leaves for free next summer.
Sunderland have now entered the picture, but their initial offer has not been enough to convince the Serie A champions.
The midfielder’s own ambitions could offer the Black Cats some encouragement. Anguissa has previously been linked with a return to the Premier League and is understood to feel that he didn’t show his best form during his time at Fulham.
A second chance in England therefore remains an attractive possibility for the former Fulham player.
However, Sunderland will have to overcome Allegri’s preference to keep him.
The Black Cats are keen on Anguissa and have reportedly taken the first step by making an offer. Napoli’s rejection means they now face a decision over whether to increase their proposal, particularly with the Italian club demanding a fee in the region of £17 million.
