‘Fighting Spirit’: Chris Rigg Mentality Vital As Midfielder Mentors Sunderland Recruits

Chris Rigg has adopted a commanding leadership role at Sunderland.

The teenager created five chances against Hull City on Tuesday. He operated as a central tactical anchor for Régis Le Bris. The manager relied on heavy rotation to secure a narrow cup win over Hull.

Mentoring New Wearside Arrivals

Sunderland integrated several summer additions during the Carabao Cup fixture. Dayann Methalie, Jules Ahoka, and Malick Fofana all earned their first starts. Rigg quickly stepped up to support the incoming talent.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, the midfielder praised their adaptation.

“Jules, Dayann and Malick, they were all outstanding. It’s really hard to come to a new culture, a new team, but when you perform like that, it just gives you the best chance.”

He also mentored debutant Timur Tutierov. Drawing on his own breakthrough experiences, Rigg is eager to help the youngster settle on Wearside.

Fuelling A Gruelling Schedule

Outside predictions of relegation have sparked defiance in the dressing room. Rigg insists that the squad embraces their underdog status as they tackle European and domestic fronts.

He outlined that the current depth is vital.

“We want to take it game by game, but we’ve also got to think that there’s a lot of games coming up and our squad depth is good now,” said Rigg. “We’ve got a lot of players fighting for their place.”

Sunderland will test that depth immediately. The Black Cats host Arsenal in the Premier League this Saturday before welcoming AZ Alkmaar.
