Arsenal Defeat Sunderland After Penalty Drama

Sunderland suffered a 2-0 defeat against reigning champions Arsenal. Régis Le Bris’ side delivered a fiercely competitive display on Saturday. They executed an aggressive tactical blueprint that unsettled the visitors at the Stadium of Light. The Premier League fixture ultimately pivoted on a dramatic two-minute sequence in the second half.

Two Minutes That Defined The Match

Enzo Le Fée earned a 56th-minute penalty after Dan Ballard was held by Ezri Konsa. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was left absolutely incensed by the officiating decision. Speaking to Fox Sports, he argued: “This is not acceptable at this level,” before questioning the video officials. He added: “I watched it 20 times and I cannot find a way to understand how they think to give a penalty in that situation, or the way the VAR has to intervene.”

David Raya rescued the visitors by pushing Le Fée’s spot-kick against the post. Arsenal immediately punished the missed opportunity at the other end. Bruno Guimarães curled a stunning long-range strike into the top corner just two minutes later. Despite falling behind, the resilient performance highlighted Sunderland’s reliable squad depth against elite opposition.

Reinildo Dismissed In Stoppage Time

Sunderland continued to press for an equaliser deep into the contest. Their spirited resistance finally ended during stoppage time. Reinildo Mandava received a second yellow card for conceding a late penalty. Bukayo Saka converted the resulting kick to seal a fourth straight win for Arsenal.

The result extends a frustrating historical run for the hosts. They have now failed to win any of their last 18 league meetings with Arsenal since November 2009. Sunderland must quickly regroup before they visit Manchester City next Sunday.
