Sunderland secure AZ Alkmaar victory to end European absence

Sunderland beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 to end a 53-year European absence.

Régis Le Bris introduced four tactical changes for Wednesday’s historic Stadium of Light fixture. Trai Hume and Malick Fofana started to disrupt the Dutch side’s early build-up. Granit Xhaka commanded the central midfield alongside Enzo Le Fée. The hosts dominated the opening exchanges with an aggressive high press.

Speaking to the Gazette, Le Bris outlined his tactical blueprint.

“The first half we imposed ideas. They were mobile, especially in the high press but we imposed this press progressively, created chances as well – crosses, shots, second balls and so on.”

Le Fée Converts Decisive Penalty

Le Fée secured the breakthrough from the spot in the 66th minute. The midfielder banished memories of a saved penalty during their clash against Arsenal to confidently beat Jari De Busser.

His composure drew high praise from his head coach in the Guardian.

“It was important to score,” Le Bris said. “But Enzo stepped up with bravery and courage. He’s resilient.”

Resolute Midfield Secures Victory

Xhaka controlled the late tempo to protect the advantage. The captain continues to drive standards while chasing a personal European mission this season. AZ Alkmaar applied late pressure as Kees Smit curled an effort narrowly wide. The hosts maintained their defensive discipline to protect the clean sheet.

Le Bris must now prepare his squad for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Manchester City.
