Sunderland player earns first international senior call up

Lynden Gooch, 20, has received his first international senior call up after just four games for the Black Cats.

Born in Santa Cruz, California, United States, the Sunderland Midfielder has earned a place in Jurgen Klinsmann’s 23 man squad that will face Cuba in a historic friendly.

The friendly, which will take place on October the 7th, will be the first game on Cuban soil since 1947. Four days later, United States will host New Zealand on home soil, giving Gooch two games to force his entry permanently into the senior squad.

Gooch’s previous international games were for the United States under 20 years of age team, and only one appearance for the Republic of Ireland  under 18 years of age side.

However after impressing new manager David Moyes, Gooch, since having two loan spells at Gateshead and Doncaster Rovers, was given a clear chance by Moyes, in which the young midfielder has impressed the Wearsider’s at the Stadium of Light including an away debut on the opening game of the season to Manchester City which resulted in a 2-1 defeat.

We at Read Sunderland send our congratulations to Lynden Gooch, and hope he does well on his debut senior appearance.

In other news, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been recalled from his Under 21 England selection.
