Former France and Sunderland full-back Anthony Reveillere has announced his retirement from football after a 17-year playing career.
The 36-year-old made 17 appearances for the Black Cats last season after joining on a free transfer in October – following an injury crisis that ruled out Patrick van Aanholt and Billy Jones for long periods of time.
He fell out of favour under then new boss Dick Advocaat and was released at the end of the season following the Dutchman’s return to the Stadium of Light.
Reveillere made nearly 500 domestic appearances during his career, as well as 77 Champions League appearances for Lyon – where he spent the majority of his career.
As well as playing for Lyon, he signed for Rennes and Napoli before joining the Black Cats. He was capped 20 times for France and scored once for Les Blues. His last cap came in the Euro 2012 quarter-final.
The Frenchman stated that being alone and away from his child contributed to his decision, as well as a lack of offers from clubs.
