Sunderland went into the game needing a positive result and performance at this early period in the season.
The Black Cats started comfortably in this game, with the defence and midfield looking solid, but with very little pace in midfield and little happening in attacking play, with Defoe having a couple of chances and Gooch nearly catching the Everton goalkeeper out with an over-hit cross.
However, the second half was very different for the lads. Immediately after coming out for we were under a lot of pressure and the Midfield and defense started to look shaky with individual mistakes and lack of commitment in challenges by some players and in the 60th minute a goal against the run of play was the first of an eleven minute hat-trick for Romelu Lukaku which wrapped a 3-0 victory for the visitors at the stadium of light.
