Bruno Guimarães scores stunner as Arsenal edge past Sunderland

Bruno Guimarães secured a crucial Premier League victory for Arsenal on Saturday.

The reigning champions defeated Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light. Granit Xhaka captained the hosts against his former club. The hosts produced an impressive second-half display following their late Saturday kick-off.

Guimarães Punishes Sunderland Penalty Miss

The match turned on a dramatic second-half sequence. David Raya saved an Enzo Le Fée penalty in the 55th minute. Just two minutes later, Guimarães curled a brilliant strike into the top corner. Bukayo Saka then converted a stoppage-time penalty to seal the result. Sunderland defender Reinildo was sent off for hauling Saka down.

Régis Le Bris praised his side despite the ultimate outcome. Speaking to the Guardian, the Sunderland manager reflected on the pivotal moment.

“We got the momentum, created chances and it was a big save from Raya from the penalty. I think it was very good goalkeeping rather than a poor penalty. Raya was absolutely impressive today.”

Arteta Questions Penalty Decision

Mikel Arteta expressed deep frustration regarding the earlier penalty awarded against Ezri Konsa. He told Al Jazeera that the refereeing decision could have derailed their campaign.

“It’s unacceptable at this level; this can change the course of a season and the championship. It’s not acceptable. I’ve seen it 10 times to make sure, and it’s not possible at this level that it can be a penalty. It cannot happen.”

Sunderland next travel to face Manchester City in the Premier League.
