“I didn’t want to come here for one year” — Granit Xhaka details Chelsea snub ahead of European return

Granit Xhaka rejected summer interest from Chelsea to remain at Sunderland.

The 33-year-old reaffirmed his long-term commitment on Tuesday. He will lead Régis Le Bris’ side against AZ Alkmaar on Wednesday. The tie marks their first continental appearance in 53 years.

Xhaka detailed his decision during his pre-match press conference. Speaking to The Northern Echo, the midfielder addressed his future.

“There was a big rumour about myself in the summer,” he said.

Despite the Stamford Bridge link, he refused to push for a departure.

“Of course, it’s a bit easier to say that now because you never know what is going to happen. But it was clear I didn’t want to come here for one year and then leave.”

His stance highlights a major cultural shift under owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.

Historic Stadium Of Light Comeback

Wednesday night represents a monumental milestone for the hosts. The club competed in the third tier just four years ago.

Le Bris has finalised his AZ Alkmaar tactical plans ahead of the tie. The head coach told english.aawsat.com his squad are ready.

“We are really proud to be in this position. We earned this opportunity last season with a great season. We had tough moments but at the end we stayed consistent.”

Xhaka is equally driven by his own personal European mission. The captain intends to create more unforgettable memories on Wearside.

Sunderland travel to face Manchester City in the Premier League this Sunday.
