Italian midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini has headed back to his native Italy today, moving to Serie A side Bologna on a season-long loan deal.
The move more or less brings to an end the Sunderland career for Giaccherini, who has struggled for fitness and form since his £6-million move from Juventus in 2013. After a decent debut season, Giaccherini has been plagued by injuries, which has seen him fall down the pecking order at Sunderland. It has been a frustrating time on Wearside for the midfielder, with Giaccherini himself keen to prove himself at Sunderland this year.
The former Juventus man holds hope of breaking back into the Italian national team for Euro 2016 next summer, and with first-team opportunities hard to come by he has forced a move to Serie A. The 30-year-old will now look to progress his career in Italy, with Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat confirming last week that Giaccherini was to depart. Advocaat said: “I understand the interest from Italy
“My personal view is that Giaccherini is not a player for England.
“He is a great talent, a good touch, good passing, but you don’t get the time to do that in England.”
