Advocaat reflects on Sunderland's defeat at Old Trafford

Dick Advocaat was a frustrated figure as Sunderland produced the same old story during their 3-0 defeat to Manchester United today. The Dutchman openly criticized some of his players, a trait he has resisted so far this season.

Two goals within a minute either side of half-time saw the Black Cats suffer their fifth defeat of the season as they still search for their first win of the new campaign. Some neat play from United down the left saw Juan Mata turn the ball across the face of the goal, with Memphis Depay getting ahead of Billy Jones to tap into the net in the fourth minute of added time. Sunderland were once again their own worst enemies, and 38 seconds after the restart and it was two, Wayne Rooney was on hand to provide a similar tap-in after good work down the left again, this time from the superb Anthony Martial.

Sunderland were resolute and performed better than in recent weeks but lacked a cutting edge. Juan Mata added a late third after some good work down the right from Ashley Young. Dick Advocaat looked a frustrated and helpless character on the sidelines and here is what he has had to say after the game:

Dick: "Again, we were well-organised against a good side, but we gave the game away in two minutes." #safc

Why did you take off Adam Johnson, Dick? "Every ball he touched was wrong, from what I'd seen." #safc

Dick: "The first goal was a long ball and Patrick van Aanholt is watching his own man, instead of closing down." #safc

DA on Johnson: I took him off because every ball he touched was wrong. #SAFC
