September has been a poor month for Sunderland, they crashed out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of Manchester City, whilst finding a comfy spot at the bottom of the premier league table as the club remain winless. Read Sunderland’s writers choose their player of the month for September.
Gary Johnson’s player of the month – Duncan Watmore
The young winger scored a goal against Southampton from the penalty spot and bagged a lovely hat trick against Man City only to be ignored in the Capital One Cup game and also not feature at Old Trafford. Notice how I have only mentioned his appearances in the under-21 side? That’s because poor Duncan can’t break into a first team that has been woeful. We will end up losing Duncan due to his lack of first team appearances and we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

Joe Rowell’s player of the month – Fabio Borini
Player of the month for me has to be Borini. He hasn’t scored yet in a Sunderland shirt during this spell here, but no one has in the whole of September except for Toivonen in the Capital One Cup. Before we signed Borini, we didn’t have many players who would actually give 100% every match. No one seemed to really care about the club, but when the Italian is on the field he will always just run and run and put all of his effort in for the shirt, and that is what Sunderland need if they are to come out of this relegation scrap.

Chris Sparks’ player of the month – Yann M’Vila
He really is a cut above the rest of the squad in terms of natural footballing ability. His form may have dipped from his opening month but he still out-performed every single Sunderland player. I’m hopeful that some players step-up and perform because these awards are becoming a one-man show as the Black Cats look more and more like a one-man team.
